If the python was not hungry, but saw the prey as a threat, it would eliminate the threat but not eat it.
I did a web search and all I could find was the Burmese Python is a native threat to people in Florida.
Alligators are found primarily in the Everglades in South Florida and Louisiana. In Florida, there is a new predator that has become a threat to alligators: the Burnese Python. In both states, man has and will always be a threat as we continue to destroy their habitat. The Burmese Python came to Florida by accident in the last 10 years or so and find the Everglades to be the perfect breeding and hunting ground.
Fear or hunger ! Any snake will strike at a potential threat - to try an make the aggressor think twice about getting any closer.
I dont believe a mongoose would be predudice against the type of snake...and they are a known major threat to snakes.
Reticulated Python
As far as I'm aware - it isn't ! The only REAL threat to a Royal Python (to give it its correct name) is MAN ! The human race is destroying natural habitat at an alarming rate in favour of utilising land for houses, or cutting down forests for timber.

It depends upon the species. Most python species are smallish, and are not dangerous. Large species such as the Australian scrub python, olive python, Burmese python and reticulated python are all known to have attacked people and are known to inflict horrible injuries and even death! It depends what specie of Python you're talking about. The smaller Pythons - such as the Royal python (Python regius) can give a nasty bite - but are not capable of harming people(due to their size). However - larger species - such as the African Rock Python (Python sebae sebae) are certainly large enough to swallow a small child.
The ball python is only one type of Python. As I don't know which other type of python you're asking me to compare the ball python with I can't really answer your question...
