Here's a really simplified answer for you: The purpose of the ozone layer is it blocks harmful UV rays from reaching the surface. Since the ozone layer is wearing away, the harmful rays are reaching the surface, and it causes cancers and eye problems.

The ozone layer is a protector of electromagnetic radiation from the sun. If it suddenly disappeared, all life on earth exposed to the radiation would be killed, and the radiation would penetrate very far into the earth's crust so avoiding it would be nearly impossible. Many scientists say that if earth was in the range of a supernova, or exploding star, the initial burst wouldn't kill everyone, but the decay to the ozone layer caused by it would.

The main threats of a thinning ozone layer include, but are probably not limited to; -

-increased gamma radiation, which would result in heightened risk of cancer, among other highly disagreeable results.

-heightened global temperature, as more energy is let through the atmosphere, which in turn would further propel the global warming, which in turn have dramatic consequences for not only humanity, but doubtlessly on most, if not all organisms on planet earth.

there are probably more direct reasons, but i can't think of more. however, i would like to point out that should even one species of animals be driven to extinction, this would undoubtedly cause a chain-reaction, ecologically speaking. For instance; if the wolf died here in Norway, we would undoubtedly need to shoot more moose, seeing as without the natural predator the wolf poses as, the moose population might skyrocket, threatening to collapse an entire ecosystem. this chain-reaction is transferrable to most ecosystems.
