There is two class of American thoughts on this.
The most used road is get your insurance policy at your local work shop. Few buy it on their own. Then let the insurance company and pharmaceutical companies determine your health care. What you say is what I do. Well, maybe a small option here or there.
If they do not work, they let the government determine their access to that system. After all the whole system is tied together and very expensive. Some still try to use this system without health care benefits as they want the money for other purposes. Either way the cost is very expensive and appears from my view. Often detrimental to your quality of life is my opinion.
Those of us who believe in liberty and self-reliance and quality of care. Study to know what options are available. Most of this group, do not have insurance as insurance would not pay for most of the cures in using Doctors who do alternative practices that are often similar to many other countries and far cheaper. We also believe the cure brings on a greater quality of life and often longevity. This group also wants to determine the method to be used to resolve their health issues and not allowing big pharmacy, hospitals or Doctors to determine or cure but to only advise of options.
In conclusion. I believe the three most important issues and depending which group you are from will determine the priority of these issues.
For the first group. call conventional medicine. 1. Insurance policy often grips this group as it is expensive. 2. Costs that relate to the care that insurance does not pay or what many call deductibles. Which are often very costly, too. 3.How fast does this cure me? For I need to get back to work.
The second group, call alternative health care. 1. Knowledge of what choices one has to resolve this health issue. Is the most important. 2. Their choice to choose the approach used to resolve this health issue. 3. The Doctor is an adviser and the patient has the final say. 4. Cost is very reasonable so that is usually of not great importance.
