The proton and neutron are found in the nucleus, and the electron is found in the electron cloud surrounding the nucleus.

Further down, you have up and down quarks. Two up quarks and one down quark form a proton, and two down quarks and one up quark form a neutron.

Protons, neutrons and electrons.Protons and neutrons are in the nuclesu. They have almost the same mass and are 1875 X as heavy as the electron which is found outside the nucleus, (electrons are in "clouds" in the most simple description)

Nucleus of the atom : Proton (+ positive charge), Neutron (no charge).

Shells/cloud round the nucleus of the atom: Electron (- negative charge)

In an electrically neutral atom there are always the same number of electrons in the shells/cloud as there are Protons in the nucleus.
