1. Start the car and get it warm
2. Turn the car off
3. Jumper the ALDL (Diagnostic) terminal at the computer
There is a small plastic cover in the passenger-side footwell. The diagnostic connector is behind this cover. Connect a jumper wire between the left two lower-most spots in the connector. 4. Observe the service engine soon light to make sure it is flashing
5. Connect the inductive pickup on the timing light to the coil wire
6. Check the label under the hood for the timing specification. The manuals say 10 degrees BTDC, but there is a TSB that says 8 degrees BTDC. If you live where there are SMOG checks, go with the value on the underside of the hood.
11. Adjust the timing by loosening the distributor hold down screw and rotating the distributor toward or away from you. My recollection is that away from you advances the engine.
The timing marks are a v cut in the crank pulley and a small black plastic pointer that sits to the right and above the crankshaft pulley. It's nigh impossible to see on a car with air conditioning because the AC cars have an extra deep crankshaft pulley. I use a white paint pen to make it reflective.
