Many woods are very expensive. Generally woods used in furniture or interior use are fairly rare and therefore expensive. At the lower end of expensive I would include most of the maple varieties, many of the oaks, Purple Heart, Teak, Cherry Apple, Pear and Walnut. Woods go up in price from these to Bobinga, Amboyna, Rosewood and many others. - Take a walk in a quality woodstore one day - it's an education .

The most expensive wood for burial caskets, at least for mass produced units,

is mahogany. Hand finished top of the line mahogany caskets made of 2" to 4" thick planks cost between US $ 6,000 (Online casket retailer) and $ 40,000 (manufacturer's suggested list price). Lower priced mahogany caskets are available as well because there are big quality and price differences in mahogany wood. The former Marsellus casket company of Syracuse (NY), which had the reputation of being the finest manufacturer of hardwood caskets in the US, used for its expensive mahogany caskets for example only select grade solid ribbon grained African mahogany from trees which were around 500 years old.

One should mention, though, that the price of a luxurious solid American black walnut casket, sometimes even that of a solid cherry luxury casket, can exceed that of a mahogany casket from the middle price range (around $ 5,000). Environmental conscious people who choose a wooden luxury casket tend to prefer walnut or cherry caskets because there is no danger of a destructive impact on the tropical rain forest.
