Some traditional instruments are Guitars, violins, horns, and bass. Mariachis are Mexican bands that play the traditional instruments. The Samba originated from a Afro- Brazillian couples dance and the Bossa nova evolved from the Samba but it has less precussion.
Most of the instruments used in latin American music is based on percussion e.g the surdo which is known as the heart of the samba.
The guitarron is the bass guitar commonly used by mariachis. It is about the size of a bass fiddle and hangs from the player's neck by a strap.
"El Mariachi Loco" Written by Román Palomar Arreola Performed by Mariachi Bandido
I was watching a program on Mariachi Music, and supposedly Mariachi is a combination of (Jesus' earthly mother) 'Mary' and 'Aches' or the pains and suffering that she underwent seeing her firstborn son suffer and died. I believe that this is why they sound like they're shouting: "Aye-yaye-yaye" and some times sound off-key with their singing. The above answer is one theory, but it is only speculation. It is known that during the 19th century when Europeans came to Central America, they refered to the bands as "marriage bands" because they played at festivals and it stuck. In Spanish, the letter "J" does not have the same sound as in English. In Spanish the later "J" sound like the English letter "H," and the letter "H" is spelled "hache." Mexicans found it difficult to pronounce the English word marriage. Thus, marr-i-aje was pronounced, marr-i-hache. Keep in mind this is only theory as well, but it is accepted and taught in many universities.

Jarabe Tapatio qualifies as such. It is a traditional folk dance born in the western state of Jalisco (capital: Guadalajara) at the beginnings of the 19th century. Men are dressed like mariachis and women are dressed in a style known as "China Poblana". Originally forbidden by Spanish authorities when Mexico was still part of the Spanish empire - due to its sexual symbolism - as soon as Mexico became independent in 1821, Jarabe Tapatio became one of the main symbols of Mexican culture.
Not particularly. Although Mexico is the 10th largest producer of oil in the world, its oil wells would pale against other products and items associated with Mexico. These would include mariachis, Cancun, tequila or the Mexican sombrero.
