Here are some things that make a character believable:

• thoughts and feelings that a real person would have in a similar situation
• behaving in a logical manner, the way a real person would behave in a similar situation
• realistic appearance, not overly pretty or handsome
• realistic powers or abilities
• realistic problems and difficulties

Whatever traits you want them to have -- you're the writer. So long as your characters have history, individual mannerisms and ways of speaking, their own thoughts and hopes, and logical actions, they'll be believable. Give them whatever traits they need to fit into your story.

Here are the characteristics all of your characters should have:

• Flaws. No character should be perfect. Writers often call these perfect imaginary characters "Mary Sue" after a particularly horrible character in an old Star Trek story. Do not make your character a Mary Sue!
• Quirks. Your character should have recognizable mannerisms and ways of doing things that will signal to the reader that one specific character is there, talking or moving or doing something.
• A special way of talking. Each of your characters should have things they habitually say, grammar that they use, or accents they may have. Different characters have different levels of education, so they would use longer or shorter words.
• Internal Logic. Each character should have a good reason for doing whatever they do in your story, and it should make sense based on what we know about that character.

To give you a good example that you will recognize:

Frodo and Sam in The Lord of the Rings books and movies are two characters. You can tell who is who because Frodo is more educated and wealthy, while Sam is poorly educated and a servant. Frodo tends to pull out The Ring and play with it during the book and movie. Sam tends to think about food and cooking and to talk about gardening. Each of them is an individual, and if you met them in the street one day, you'd probably recognize them!
