Differences between Thomson's and Rutherford's atomic model

1. According to Thomson the whole ball is positive and negatively charged electrons are embedded on it. Hence named as water melon model

Whereas, according to Rutherford, the positive nucleus is concentrated in a smaller region called core and negatively charged electrons move around this core, as if planets move around the sun. Hence planetary model.

2. Thomson was not able to explain about the large angle scattering in case of the familiar alpha particle scattering experiment.

But Rutherford gave successful explanation for the same because of his model.

3. Thomson was able to give explanation for only one line in case of hydrogen spectral series.

But Rutherford's model gave room to explain about the various lines in different series. Of course with the help of Bohr's postulates.

A simple answer would be that J.J. Thomson used a Cathode-Ray Tube, he discovered that a positively charged plate attracts the beam and he concluded that the beam had a negative electric charge, as Ernest Rutherford used a beam of small, positively charged particles at a thin sheet of gold foil. Rutherford surrounded the foil with a screen coated with zinc sulfide, a substance that glowed when struck by the particles.

According to Thomson's atomic theory, the mass of an atom was special evenly throughout its volume. Errest Rutherford's experiment proved this wrong.

What is Thomson atom?

J.J. Thompson was the person who suggested the plum pudding model for the atomic structure. He declared that the electrons are located between a cloud of the positive charges. This model was proven incorrect from the alpha particle experiment done by Ernest Rutherford.

How many miles is Thomson GA from Atlanta?

There are about 116.817 miles between Thomson, GA and Atlanta, GA.

What is the difference between Thomsons atomic model and Rutherfords atomic model?

Thomson's model was the "Plum Pudding model" because it had electrons "floating" around in the ball, but Rutherford's model shows the electron shells, the nucleus, and the molecular particles: neutron, proton, and electron. Hope this helps!

Who discovered radioactive decay in 1898?

ernest Rutherford _______________________________________________________________ Radioactive decay was actually discovered in 1896 by Henri Bacquerel. Ernest Rutherford discovered the formula of radioactive decay (Such as the falk-life, differences between alpha and beta decay and even how the elements become new elements after the decay), but he did not discover the radioactive decay himself.
