Assure that the item is to specification (i.e. within allowable tolerances when working to drawings, or to meet stringent testing criteria when creating chemicals or foodstuffs).
To protect the end-user from harm due to an item being out of spec.
Speaking as part of a Quality Management team for a medical device manufacturer, everything we make has to be to an assurance of quality as then results generated by our equipment must be to a high degree of accuracy in order to allow a correct diagnosis.
Imagine if a test-strip used in a blood analyzer was out of specification and gave a false result, it could end-up with a patient being treated for a disease they may not have. This would lead to un-nessecary treatments and potential damage.
