I'm going to answer your question with another question. Where did this idea of only TWO branches of science come from? Type in 'science' at www.wikipedia.org and you will see there are many branches of science. However, if you wanted to break into two categories there are the 'hard' sciences (Biology, chemistry, physics) and the 'soft' sciences (sociology, economics, psychology). You can another category sometimes referred to as 'formal' science which consists of math, statistics, and logic.

The major branches of science are physical sciences (e.g., physics, chemistry), life sciences (e.g., biology, medicine), Earth sciences (e.g., geology, meteorology), and social sciences (e.g., psychology, sociology). These branches are further divided into specialized fields that focus on specific aspects of the natural or social world.
The two major divisions of natural science are physical science, which focuses on non-living systems like matter and energy, and biological science, which studies living organisms and their interactions with each other and their environment.
