Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)
Multi-core
The two major manufacturers of processors are Intel and AMD
A single core processor is just that... one processing core. A dual core processor is actually two processing cores on one chip. It is like having two processors in your system, but it is faster than two individual processors.
There are two type of microprocesser that aerspace designer will find usefull 1, the single chip MOS Processor 2, the bit-slice bipolar processor

"Core" processor - the central or main processor core. It has actually 2 computers on one chip so it can theoretically process two computer instructions at the same time.
Core 2 Duo is the marketing term given to a line of Intel processors which have two processor units on the same chip.

When we talk about Core 2 duo, Core duo, or Core single we are talking about the actual numbers of microprocessors in the computer. When you buy a Core 2 Duo chip, such as the "Wolfdale" series from Intel you get one chip that has two actual processors on it and either one or two L2 Caches. To compare a core 2 duo T8300 processor to a 2.4 ghz chip that only has one processor on it that has a 800mhz FSB, the T8300 would not quite be twice as powerful, but it is more than one and a half times as powerful.

A chipset consists of the North Bridge and the South Bridge.
Minimum mode describes a chip configuration where the 8288 bus controller is not required. Certain signals, such as ALE, are then generated directly by the processor. Maximum mode describes a chip configuration where the 8288 bus controller is required. The 8288 generates ALE, and other signals, allowing the processor to provide other signals, such as LOCK. These two mode allow the system designer some freedom, and allow the number of pins on the chip to remain lower.
