one is the obvious charity role, and Salvationists on active duty playing Christmas carols, soliciting funds- and helping the poor- and not so poor with charity thrift shops and similar actions- that are not overlty religious. on the other hand the Salvation Army is a Religious denomination int he fullest sense of the word. all commissioned officers are considered Ordained Ministers. the Army having its own training camps at Suffern New York. the organization"s vast output of relief effort and favorable publicity makes them arguably the most visible charity. They tend , in some districts, to tone down the religious angles- as there are in a sense two SA"s the secular charfity with the Red Shield insignia and the thrift shops, and related activties- and the religious one which has a totally different insignia- ( Blood and Fire) banner and insignia worn on Garrison caps and so on, this is the Religious arm. an interesting feature of Salvationist theology is that they have all the trappings of a religious denomination, and services, but do not observe Sacraments. For some reason the song ( Power in the Blood) written by Evangeline Booth- has long been a salvationist favorite- even played on caliopes, but has not gotten wider circulation- no pun intended.
The Salvation Army exists for service to God and for the benefit of others. Is it important? Those who have received help would say yes. If The Salvation Army no longer fulfills these roles then it no longer has any importance.
