The Diaphragm is the thin larger diameter piece which is used to listen to high frequency sounds such as crackles or wheezing in the lungs.

The Bell is the smaller diameter piece that usually has a bowl shape. The bell is used to listen to low frequency sounds such as turbulent blood flood which could indicate bruits or blood swirling through blood vessels which are partially occluded due to plaque build up.
