Electronic Power Steering (EPS) and hydraulic power steering (HPS). Electronic does not require power steering fluid and hydraulic does, based on your owners manual power steering fluid suggested type.
It is not possible to alter a car from a manual steering into a power steering car. The engines for the two types of cars are very different.

The power steering is a separate system to the engine. The power steering system consists of a pump, bolted to the engine. A steering box, bolted to the vehicals frame and two hoses carrying fluid back and forth between the two. There is no power steering hose "in" the engine.
This is two of the things I know that could be wrong. The power steering pump is either bad or there is no power steering fluid in the pump causing it to have steering problems. Be sure to check the fluid level in the power steering pump.

Depends on the year of your BMW, and the style of power steering rack. There are 2 common types: 1) Electronic Power Steering (EPS) 2) Hydraulic Power Steering (HPS). EPS does not require fluid and HPS does require fluid.
Mixing brands of power steering fuel does not make a difference. Just be sure to not mix different types of fuels.
NO ! -The power steering uses it's own type of fluid. Other types may damage seals.
