When longshore currents encounter a bay or bend in the coast with a shallow sheletered water , the materials carried will be deposited in the direction of the longshore drift, which is repeated zigzag movement of sediments in one direction along the coast. Over time, the accumulation of materials will result in a long, narrow ridge of sand with one end attached to the mainland and the other extending seawards to form a spit. When a spit joins nearby offshore island, it forms a tombolo.
