Caterpillars become butterflies and moths which pollinate flowers and thus help boost fruit crops.

They are a major food source for birds and the eradication of caterpillars by insecticides is a large factor in the decline in bird numbers world wide.

They are dried and used as food especially in Africa and Australian Aborigines regard fat,white Wichity grubs as a delicacy. Silkworms are caterpillars specific to Mullberry bushes and their pupa silk is unwound and woven into silk.
