It depends on culture and religion. For some people looking out for themselves before others is much more important than it is for others. Some will steal a best friends' job, partner, literal material possesions, style, phrases, or self esteem, in order to have it for themselves. Others have more of a balance that allows for personal success, but not at the direct expense of others. For some, ethical issues are completely opposite. Take for example the abortion debate, both sides see themselves as completely logical, justified and moral in their opinions.

For some people values such as giving to others first, is more important. That means buying children warm clothes before filling the fridge with a dozen cold beers, first. The problem with differing values is that not everyone agrees with them, and someone always suffers as a result, whether that be the cold child, or the husband's bank account when the woman is obsessed with keeping up with the Jones' etc, etc. Obviously because people don't agree on values, there is still world hunger, and billionares, religious wars and individualism, and the patriarchy, and men getting away with not paying child support, and women getting away with having copious amounts of children they can't afford, and people just generally acting without consideration for anyone else but themselves and their values.
