Typically, CD-ROMs are connected using a power connector called a Molex Connector. A Molex Connector has four wires, two for power, the other two for grounding. This connector supplies two different voltages to the device it is connected to - 12v and 5v. For more information on Molex Connectors, see the article here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molex_connector#Disk_drive_connector_.28AMP_Commercial_MATE-N-LOK.29
To do this, you need a power adapter (a computer power supply will work great for this). The Drive will have a molex connector on the back for +12 VDC, ground, ground, +5 VDC. Connect a molex connector to that drive with the proper voltages, and the drive should power on. However, it won't be much good without connecting it to a computer motherboard, or drive controller.
What two voltages are present on a peripheral power connector?
There are two kinds in common use:Molex - an older standard, but still commonSATA - Serial ATA, a newer standardSee the related links for pictures.
The tool designed specifically to test DC current from a Molex connector is called a Power Supply Tester.
Some of them do. Your CD-ROM and hard drive can have molex power connector, or/and SATA power connecter. I think SCSI interface uses molex power connectors too.
Molex Connectors are used in Power Supplies for powering up the devices. There are different types of Molex Connectors on Power Supply for. eg. 20 or 24 Pin Power Connector\ 4 Pin IDE device \ Sata Device Connector.Mini Molex refers to connector powering Floppy Disk Drives or AGP Cards on Computer System.
molex 4-pin
A Molex power connector is a 4-pin power connector found in most computer power supplies. It is used to provide power to large internal drives like hard drives and CD/DVD drives. They are slowly being replaced by SATA power connectors, which are easier to install can cannot be inserted incorrectly. They should not be confused with a Berg connector which is much smaller and is used to power floppy drives. The molex connector is used for IDE drives
