There are many degrees of autism on the autism spectrum. However, the following are some signs that may be noticed in a child's early development. If a child does not achieve some of these developmental milestones, there is a chance that they have autism.

Signs of autism in children, generally show up in delayed development:

  • By 6 months or closely thereafter, you will not see big smiles or other signs of happiness or joy
  • By 9 months or closely thereafter, there will a lack of sounds, smiles, or other facial expressions that are usually shared by with a children (example: no expression of surprise when playing peek-a-boo), or response to a smile from someone else
  • By 12 months or closely thereafter, no attempts to speak (baby talk, babbling), no attempt to get your attention, does not reach out to be picked up
  • By 12 months or closely thereafter, lack of gestures (example: pointing, waving bye-bye)
  • By 16 months or closely thereafter, no speech that consists of words
  • By 24 months or closely thereafter, not putting two words together to express something meaningful (I go, doggie here, me want)
  • At any age, loss of speech or baby talk (babbling), or social skills

If you notice numerous items on this list, have them evaluated by their pediatrician or a specialist. Early detection is essential to receiving services that can be beneficial to your child. Additionally, search for autism websites that provide a wealth of information such as checklists, sources for information, etc.
