There are two basic types of abuse. One is physical where you are hit, pushed, shoved, pinched, kicked and other physical things. Sex can be included in this because often it is violent. The second is emotional abuse. Emotional abuse is when you are called names, ignored, put down, told your are stupid or ugly, removal of sex. Each of these are men looking for control and they do it through abusing you. This is not love and if you are involved in a relationship with some of these things or both you need to get out. He will NOT stop no matter what he promises and how much he tells you he loves you. If he truly loved you he wouldn't do these things.
