A CD Contains Data in Tiny "Bumps" and "Lands". Information on CD is stored this way.¨

A Laser Reads the Bumps on a CD. A CD's bumps are so tiny, far too small for a human eye or mechanical device to detect, but large enough for a laser to read.

Light Sensors and Processors Interpret the Data as each bump each kept on the CD as 1 and 0(binary). This processor interprets the ones and zeros to assemble bytes of data which can then be forwarded to the computer's main processor for interpretation. The computer interprets this data as it was originally written on the CD, whether as a complex computer program, a basic collection of files or even simple music. As technology progresses and processor speeds increase, the CD can be spun at higher and higher rates, allowing the data on the disc to be read and sent to the processor, interpreted and used more quickly.

How are drives identified on a Windows-based computer?

The first two floppy drives, if present, are A: and B:. Then, the first active partition on the first hard drive is C: If there is a second physical hard drive, it would be D: ... additional partitions on the hard drives, if active, would get letters after that. The optical drive is normally lettered after the last hard drive partition. So, if you have a computer with 1 floppy, one hard drive with a single partition, and a CD Rom drive, the floppy would be A:, the hard drive would be C:, and the CDRom would be D: In more recent operating systems, however, you can re-arrange drive letters using the storage management tool; but the above is the "normal" arrangement.

How do you write protect a hard disk -- i.e. make it read-only?

If you are refering to an IDE Harddrive one way to do this is available under Windows 2000 or Windows XP. You would need to set permissions to the specific drive. Right click on the drive (under "My Computer")and click on the security tab. There will be listed the user accounts on the computer. If you are an 'administrator' on that computer you should be able to restrict certain users from accessing, reading or modifying the selected drive or even restrict them from accessing certain folders on that drive(under "advanced").

How can you permanently remove info from computer?

The ONLY sure way is to remove the hard drive and destroy it completely. Less drastic measures that work for most users would include formatting the hard drive and reinstalling the operating system. Short of that, anything you do will leave traces that can be followed and recovered.

Your computer broke down how do you get everything back?

If you can, open up your computer and take the hard drive out. I would then take it to a computer store and have them transfer the data (If possible) to another hard drive.
