The function of a wetland is to protect the are from hurricanes etc.

It also helps filter most of the water coming in, when have you ever seen a salt water wetland, not much it's usually brackish or fresh. brackish is when it is half and half. half salty half fresh never completely saltwater.

How has wetlands changed over time?

Wetlands have declined globally over time due to human activities such as urban development, agriculture, and draining for infrastructure projects. This has led to the loss of important biodiversity, carbon sequestration capacity, and natural flood control functions that wetlands provide. Efforts are being made to protect and restore wetlands to mitigate these negative impacts.

What are some functions that wetlands perform?

Wetlands provide numerous vital functions, including water filtration, which helps improve water quality by trapping pollutants and sediments. They act as natural flood control systems by absorbing excess rainwater and reducing runoff. Additionally, wetlands serve as critical habitats for a diverse array of plant and animal species, supporting biodiversity. They also play a role in carbon storage, helping to mitigate climate change by sequestering carbon dioxide.

How does filling wetlands to build homes change that wetland ecosystem?

Filling wetlands to build homes can disrupt the natural hydrology, impacting water flow and nutrient cycling. This can lead to loss of habitat for wildlife, decreased water quality, and increased risk of flooding as wetlands provide important ecosystem services. Overall, filling wetlands can result in a loss of biodiversity and important environmental functions.

Is a wetland man made?

Wetlands can be both natural and man-made. Natural wetlands form through processes like flooding, sediment accumulation, and changes in water flow, while man-made wetlands are created intentionally for purposes such as water management, habitat restoration, or agricultural use.
