The Wichita Falls, Texas tornado of April 10, 1979. This half-mile wide F4 tornado destroyed a large portion of Wichita Falls, killing 42 and injuring over 1700. It held the title of the costliest tornado in terms of property damage in U.S. history for 20 years until May 3, 1999. In 2011 dollars the cost of damage amounts to more than $1.2 billion.
The Joplin, Missouri tornado of May 22, 2011. This EF5 tornado destroyed a full third of the city of Joplin, killing 158 and injured over 1100, making it the seventh deadliest tornado in U.S. history, the deadliest since 1947, and the first since 1953 to kill more than 100. Damage amounted to $2.8 billion, making it the costliest tornado in U.S. history.
