Lewis and Clark Expedition (1803-06) 1.) Before Lewis met up with Clark, he began the expedition on August 30, 1803 in Pittsburgh PA. Lt. William Clark would offer to join Lewis on the expedition weeks later on October 13, 1803 at Camp Dubois (in present-day Indiana).
2.) At the time, Lewis was 29 years old and Clark was 33.
3.) The party of nearly 30 --including Lewis and Clark, three sergeants, 22 enlisted men, volunteers, interpreters, and Clark's slave.
One of the most significant contributions of the Lewis and Clark Expedition was a better perception of the geography of the Northwest and the production of the first accurate maps of the area. During the journey, Lewis and Clark prepared approximately 140 maps. One important result of the Lewis and Clark expedition was that it enabled the United States to lay claim to the Oregon region. This claim helped make possible the great pioneer movement that settled the West in the mid-1800's. A second achievement of the expedition was a better understanding of the country's natural resources. During the journey, the expedition documented over 122 species of animals and approximately 178 plants. The expedition even sent a caged prairie dog, which had never been seen before in the East, to President Jefferson as a gift. Another achievement of the Lewis and Clark Expedition was that it established friendly relations with some of the Native American tribes. For the most part, encounters between the three dozen Indian tribes and the expedition were successful. They collected a variety of Indian goods and gathered information on Indian languages and culture.
Lewis and Clark reached the Three Forks on the Missouri River on July 25, 1805. They would immediately move on, some 25 more miles, up the westernmost of the forks, what they would name a few days later the Jefferson River.

Lewis was two days behind him and on the 26th Clark went another 12 miles up the Jefferson, then turned back to the Three Forks to explore the middle fork, which they named the Madison River, after James Madison, then Secretary of State. On the 27th, he returned to the Three Forks at 3:00 pm and Lewis had arrived at 9:00 am.
William Clark along with Meriwether Lewis formed the famous explorers Lewis and Clark. They went on a three year expedition to explore the Louisiana Territory. They were also tasked with claiming the Oregon Territory for the United States.

At the time they left Camp Dubois towards St. Louis, Lewis was 29 years old and Clark was 33. The expedition itself took about three years.
A good example is a question that asks more than one thing. "Where did Lewis and Clark start their journey and who did they meet?" This could be split into: "Where did Lewis and Clark start their journey across America?" & "Who did Lewis and Clark meet on their journey?" Another: "What is the habitat of the badger, do they live in caves and how many babies do they have?" This asks three different questions. Another: "Who is on the Drachma coin and what is one worth?" Again, asks two different things.
