The Union Jack is on the Australian flag because it reflects our major heritage. The big star is the Commonwealth star which has seven points, one for each state and one for the territories. The Southern Cross is a constellation that is visible from anywhere in Australia.

The Union Jack in the top corner showed our loyalty to the British Empire in 1901. And our status at the time as a British Colony .

The 7 pointed Commonwealth Star below the Union Jack has one point for each state, and one for the Territories.

The Southern Cross is a constellation visible from almost anywhere in Australia (and the Southern Hemisphere) and has become a cultural symbol of Australia.

The fact that the flag is otherwise blue, is indicative or symbolic that Australia is surrounded by the

sea. In fact the Union flag was a part of the British blue Naval ensign used by British Navy . Our current flag was then constructed by adding local Colonial emblems . The ' Commonwealth Star ' for the Colonial Federal Parliament and the Southern cross constellation to represent Australias position in the Southern Hemisphere of the world . The blue was simple the colour of one of the three British Naval flags of the time ( used to designate different Naval Squadrons ) .
