According to the Catholic Religion, a soul has three immediate destinations, those being either Heaven, Hell or Purgatory.
Both Heaven and Hell are permanent states in which a soul is fixed for eternity, Heaven being for the Just, Hell being for the Damned. Purgatory is temporary state and only the souls of the Just go there for the purpose of expiating, in justice, any sins or effect of sins which remain on their souls, for nothing defiled can enter heaven. It is traditionally believed that most souls end up going through Purgatory before ultimately attaining to Heaven.
There is a fourth destination, that being Limbo. Limbo is reserved for those souls who have never attained the use of reason as well as never having been baptized.
