USB is the latest method of using a keyboard and mouse however, before the use of a USB hub, the use of green and purple PS/2 slots were available; purple for the keyboard, and green for the mouse. To find which connectors came before the PS/2 connectors, please refer to ancient Hieroglyphs for better answers.

I've used USB, PS/2 and Serial keyboards.

A keyboard can use a DIN, PS/2, USB, or wireless connection. For most installations, all that is necessary is to plug in the keyboard and turn on the system.

It's almost always a serial port of some kind, but might be an old RS-232 type serial port, a PS/2 serial port, or a Universal Serial Bus port depending on the mouse in question. It could even be Bluetooth (which is still a serial protocol).

Most modern PC keyboards connect to a computer by USB connection. Some of the older ones may use a PS/2 port or a serial port for a DIN or AT connector.
