Due to the low cost and small size of many modern computers they have become nearly ubiquitous in our lives today. Embedded computers (i.e. computers that are part of something else and that you never usually see as a computer) are in everything (e.g. cars, appliances, phones, televisions, games) and standard computers (e.g. mainframes, servers, desktops, laptops, netbooks, tablets) are owned by nearly every business and individual and have more uses than could ever be tabulated.
Handicapped people make use of computer based assistive devices that allow them to function in ways that others do nearly without thinking but would be denied them by their handicap without such computer based devices.
Many people would not even be alive today without computer based surgically implanted pacemakers and/or defibrillators, as well computer based portable heart monitors that can inform their doctor of their real heart symptoms experienced in everyday life instead of only in the doctor's office. (Note: Norman Jefferis "Jeff" Holter, a scientist living in Helena MT, invented the portable heart monitor in the early 1950s. It used a small analog audio tape recorder not a computer.)
