They have thick photosynthetic stems, waxy coatings on their surfaces to prevent water loss and also they are succulents, where they store water since they get very little from their environment. Also, since they are covered with spines then animals that might be interested in eating them for a source of hydration are deterred from doing so. (If the cactus were bitten, a lot of water loss would occur)
