Factual Answer:

The primary purpose of the prosecutor is to do justicerather than simply obtain as many convictions as possible. This is as important a principle as that the primary purpose of law enforcement officers is to enforce the law rather than arrest as many people as possible.

American Bar Association Model Rule of Professional Conduct sets forth several responsibilities of attorneys serving as prosecutors and while a prosecutor should zealously perform the duties of that office, they also require the protection of the Constitutional rights of the accused. These even include the obligation to remedy a situation where the prosecutor knows by clear and convincing evidence that a convicted person in his jurisdiction did not commit the crime.

The second purpose is to enforce the law by bring proper actions against persons accused of crime because that is the governmental role of the prosecutor. Never the less, even that role is secondary to seeing that justice is done.
