The cells on the inside (dermis) are mainly dermal fibroblasts (also called mesenchyme), but there are a dozen or so others such as endothelial cells (blood vessels), smooth muscle cells (arterioles), Langerhans cells (defense/immune cells), sweat glands (epithelial cells), sebaceous glands (epithelial cells), Merkel cells (touch receptors), mast cells (defense/immune cells), lymphocytes (defense/immune cells) and neurons (nerve cells). Several other types of receptors such as stretch, temperature and pressure sensors, elements of the nervous system, are also present in skin.
