Two basic ways are stratigraphy/provenance, and association with known artifact types (example - Clovis style points are fairly well known and described. If you find a Clovis point, you have a decent idea as to what the age range is).

Archaeologists can determine the age of an artifact through processes like radiocarbon dating, which measures the amount of carbon-14 remaining in organic material. Another method is stratigraphy, where artifacts found in lower layers of a site are typically older than those found in upper layers due to the principles of superposition.

How old is an artifact that contains 12.5 percent of its original carbon-14?

The artifact is approximately 17,500 years old. This calculation is based on the half-life of carbon-14, which is about 5,730 years. By determining the percentage of remaining carbon-14 in the artifact, scientists can estimate its age.

How old does an artifact have to be?

There is no specific age requirement for an artifact. Generally, an artifact is considered to be an object created or used by humans that has historical, cultural, or archaeological significance. The age of an artifact can vary depending on the context and discipline in which it is being studied.

How can you tell how old a artafact is?

Artifacts can be dated using various methods such as radiocarbon dating, dendrochronology (tree-ring dating), thermoluminescence dating, and stratigraphy. These methods analyze the materials the artifact is made of or the context in which it was found to determine its age. Consulting experts in archaeological dating techniques can provide a more accurate estimate of an artifact's age.

How do archeologists learn about the past?

They take an estimate on how old the fossil, artifact is then they examine it to tell where the artifact was made, if it is a fossil then tell what ancient creature it is then they can tell what era that creature was from.
