An endangered, small rabbit species endemic to four volcanoes south of Mexico City, Mexico, describes volcano rabbits. The world's second smallest rabbits, with the Nahuatl common names teporingo and zacatuche and the scientific name Romerolagus diazi, have body weights of 0.86 to 1.3 pounds (390 to 600 grams), seven- to nine-year lifespans, short legs, short, thick fur and small rounded ears. The twilight- to dawn-active leporids live in groups of two to five in 196.85-foot- (5-meter-) long, 15.74-inch- (40-centimeter-) deep burrows under and runways through grass tussocks and warn their co-habitants of danger by high-frequency sounds instead of by feet-thumping.
