Though I do not have experience with this exact gun, I have a Savage model 12 in 223. These go down to 1 1/2lb, but the model 11s will go down to 2 1/2 pounds. You can decrease this though by trimming the trigger springs, but 2 1/2pounds is still pretty good. If you do want it lower, just trim the trigger spring a little at a time. The actions are pretty good on Savages. The only improvement I feel is real necessary for most people is polishing the bolt with a piece of 0000 steel wool. This just makes the bolt cycle smoother. The bolt is free floating, and the barrel has a barrel nut on it, both adding to why these guns are so accurate. But, this also allows them to make the guns less expensive. What stock are you getting? The synthetic stocks are cheap. Either get a wood one, or clean up the synthetic one. Do this by shaving off the plastic ridges from the molding process. Also, you WILL need to relieve material from around the barrel. Everyone who has one complains of the barrel and stock touching, a no no with a free floated barrel. Also, stiffen the front for optimal accuracy by adding steel rods and bed in with epoxy. This will only take an hour or two though, and after that, the stock is quite nice. You can even build up the comb or other parts with fiberglass, and just paint over it. As long as you blend it together right, it all looks like one piece. I just painted mine, here's pictures of the stock drying. http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=7y5jme1&s=1 http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=6yposcn&s=1 The ultra short mag cartridges have more optimal powder burn characteristics than standard cartridges. They are supposed to be more accurate. Also, if it's a short cartridge, I'll assume it will be a short action on the gun? This would be more accurate, since the action won't flex when the gun is being fired. I can't find a 7mm short mag Savage though.

Is a 22-250 rifle a short or long action?

The 22-250 cartridge is a short action cartridge. The parent cartridge case for the .22-250 is the .250-3000 Savage. As a wildcat cartridge the .22-250 was used in both long and short actions. Remington Arms legitimized the .22-250 quite a few years ago as the .22-250 Remington.

What round does a Savage Arms Model 59 A use?

I cannot find a "Savage Model 59A" in any reference book - are you certain of the model number? There is a common Savage rifle, the Model 99A, which was chambered for .303, .30-30, or .300 Savage. The caliber markings will be on the barrel. If it is a .22 then it is almost always chambered for .22 Long Rifle. If it is chambered for .22 short, it will be marked as such. If in doubt, take the gun to a local gunsmith for a professional appraisal. The savage arms 59a is a bolt action 410 shotgun. Should have Stevens name on it above savage arms corporation.
