In 1936 Germany occupied and remilitarised the Rhineland, in contravention of the Treaty of Versailles.
The rhineland
March 7, 1936
He invaded the Rhineland in 1936. According to the Treaty of Versailles (ending the First World War) Germany was not allowed to keep troops there - it became a demilitarised area.
It really was not a case of Hitler physically tearing up the Treaty of the Versaiiles but rather he chose to disregard it. This paragraph below comes fromSigning of the Versailles Treatyby Carlos Magana (authors page), Dec. 2003from the University of California at Santa Barbara.Hitler in essence promised the German people the effacement of the Versailles Treaty. In doing so he paved the way to World War II. The German people argued that it was a dictated treaty, due to the fact that Germany had no say and this caused immense bitterness. Hitler's popularity, in large part was due to his outspoken denunciation of the treaty. He promised that he was going to reunite all Germans under the fatherland once again. The German populace was in a state of distraught. Hitler used their sentiments to come to power. He began to disregard the Treaty of Versailles when he took Germany out of the League of Nations. Germany starts rearming in 1933. Hitler bolstered that by 1940 Germany would be fully prepared for war. He occupies the Rhineland in 1936. To fulfill his promise of reuniting all Germans once again, Hitler first unites with Austria in what is termed the Anschluss. The union of Austria and Germany was forbidden by the treaty. He then negotiates with the British Prime Minister, Chamberlain, to and obtains Sudetenland, and Czechoslovakia. By 1939, Hitler has literally abolished the dictated treaty and World War II begins in 1939 with the invasion of Poland.

1936 - Germany did not take over any foreign territory, but remilitarized the Rhineland, which was a breach of the Treaty of Versailles. (The Treaty had left the area in Germany, but the Germans were not allowed to have troops there). 1938 (March) - Annexation of Austria (Anschluss). 1938 (October) - Sudetenland (that was, areas of Czechoslovakia adjoining Germany). 1939 (March) - Seized the rest of the Czech Republic and set up Slovakia as a puppet state. Also seized Memel from Lithuania. 1939 (September) - Invaded Poland ... start of World War 2 in Europe.
Germany. They were forbidden by the Treaty of Versailles, which was invalidated by the Anschluß in 1936.

Germans have occupied the Rhineland for a considerable length of time! I suspect that the question should be "When did Germany remilitarize the Rhineland?", the answer being 1936. The Rhineland had been made into a demilitarised zone after the Great War, under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, 1919. Germany had political control of this area, but was not allowed to put any troops into it. In 1936, Hitler ordered troops to re-enter the Rhineland, thus breaking the terms of the treaty.

After World War 1, the Treaty of Versailles had limited Germany's military power. As chancellor, Hitler stressed that Germany wished to revise the unfair provisions. Germany, he said, only wanted rightful place among the European states. On March 9, 1935, however, Hitler announced the creation of a new air force. One week later, he began a military draft that would expand Germany's army from 100,000 to 550,000 troops. These steps were in direct violation of the Treaty of Versailles. France, Great Britian, and Italy warned against future aggressive steps. Hitler was convinced that the Western countries had no intention of using force to maintain the Treaty of Versailles. Hence, on March 7, 1936, he sent German troops to the Rhineland. According to the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was not permitted to have weapons of fortifications there. France had the right to use force against the violation of this provision but would act without British support.
