Members of the House are typically elected from a geographic area known as acongressional district. (These districts are drawn so that they include roughly the same number of people, in order to be consistent with the "one person, one vote" Supreme Court decisions of the 1960s.) Because it is the population that matters, and not the area, some districts in urban areas may only cover a small part of one city, where in the rural areas, a district may be made up of dozens of counties. These days, a district has close to three-quarters of a million people in it. Of course, the Constitution stipulates that each state shall have at least one House member, so even if a sparsely-populated state, such as Wyoming, had fewer people than the average desired population of a district, it would still get one member.
