an established orthodontist makes by far the most money, and ironically does the LEAST amount of work. Once you have a successful practice in place as an orthodontist, you are essentially making well over $400k to simply change the occasional wire on a kid's braces a couple times a week. Your assistants and lab techs do EVERYTHING else while you go play Golf two times a week!

What differences exist between a dentist and an orthodontist?

The orthodontist is a dentist, but not all dentists are orthodontists. Dentist diagnoses and treats problems in the cavity of the mouth.
