Long line fishing is a commercial fishing style. Long lines can be miles in length. A float is set up at either end, sometimes with a light, the line is paid out and hooks are baited. The line is set out for a period of time and then is reeled in. Fish caught on the line are unhooked and collected.
The advantage is that the line does not need to be tended when it is set out. The length makes it likely that some fish will be caught somewhere along its' length.
The disadvantage of using long lines is that many fish are caught that are not commercially usable. They are discarded into the ocean. This can be a wasteful process if the lines are set out poorly.
