West Point, NY. The home of the US Military Academy since 1802, the post was first occupied by Washington's Continental Army in January, 1778. West Point sits above a sharp bend in the Hudson River, which caused sailing ships to have to tack sharply to try to negotiate the bend. Washington ordered it to be fortified and cannon emplaced there to prevent the British navy from ascending the River and dividing the states.
