You replace the gears in the axles.
I have a 1976 CJ5 with a 304 V8. It has a 3 speed transmission and stock axles. But I'm running 36'' tires. And i get around 9 mile to the gallon.
Dana 30 is the from axle and the Dana 44 in the rear
All things I've read show that up until 75 it should have a D44's Dana 30 in front Dana 44 in rear,good axles!

no... 75' and older are interchangeable... as are '76 and newer. FYI... cj5 and cj7 cannot swap at all.
For CJ7 1976 - 1981: track width front 51.5, rear 50.0 wheelbase 93.5 (some list 93.4) For CJ7 1982 - 1986: track width front 55.8 rear 55.0 wheelbase 93.5 (or 93.4) for CJ5 1955 - 1971: track width 48.44 wheelbase 80.5 for CJ5 1972- 1983: track width front 51.5, rear 50.0 wheelbase 83.5 All CJ7's used Dana 30 front axle, AMC 20 rear axle CJ5's as well, for 1976-1983
none that i know of because the wiring diagram i have says its for a 74-75 cj5. but i have noticed a few wires on the chart are different than my stock wires on my jeep. so the only difference i would say might be some of the colors
The Jeep Wrangler replaced the CJ5 in 1987.
