Fredrick Douglas was a slave. His Owner moved him up to a non Slave state because he ws a doctor for the army. The owner didnt tell him he was technically free. So, when his owner died years later. He found out. He tried to sue the owners wife but, the court wouldnt allow it because technically Douglas was black and not a citizen.
