There were many battles in Tennessee during the Civil War. One of the most important battles was the Franklin-Nashville Campaign. A series of battles were conducted in Alabama, Tennessee and northwestern Georgia. The battles were conducted during the period September 18 to December 27, 1864. The battles culminated in a battle in Nashville on December 15-16. In the Nashville battle, the Union forces routed the Confederate forces forcing the Confederated forces to retreat to Tupelo, Mississippi.
Because although it had voted to join the Confederacy, Tennessee was divided in sentiment - the Eastern part of the state was quite pro-Union. Tennessee was also the key to the Mississippi, which both sides wanted to command, as a major highway for troops and supplies. Also, the South tried to pressure Kentucky into joining the Confederacy, which meant occupying as much of Tennessee as they could.

The Battle of Nashville was a decisive Union victory. Hood's Confederate Army was forced to retreat across the Tennessee River into Mississippi, suffering so heavy losses during the battle and also the retreat, that that army had ceased to exist as an effective fighting force.

During the night more Union troops arrived by river boat. This allowed the Union Army to turn the tide of battle on the second day and ultimately win the battle.
