Gen. Forrest suggested to Gen. Hood, Commander of the Army of Tennessee to outflank the strong Unionist positions by crossing the river Harpeth with large forces instead attacking the town frontally as Hood devised to do.
Hood rejected the advice. The most he agreed with was to detach two out of three Forrest's cavalry divisions beyond the river to carry on a diversionary attack against the Federal left wing.
So he was relegated to a secondary duty he wasn't able to successfully perform because the Union cavalry succeeded in keeping his action at bay.
Brices Crossroads in Mississippi
General Forrest attacked a column of Union soldiers who had marched out of Memphis in June 1864. Even though he was out numbered more than 2 to 1, he was able to use the terrain and his skill at command of the battle to defeat them. This battle has even been studied at the British army's officer school in Sandhurst to teach their cadet officers.
Another battle that was almost as famous was the Battle of Fort Pillow, TN on April 12, 1864. He was criticized for allowing his soldiers to kill so many of the black soldiers and it was called a massacre. He has always been criticized for this even though there is a lot of debate as to if he actually commanded the killings or was even able to stop it.
Nathan Bedford Forrest began the war in a cavalry regiment and progressed quickly to a Colonel in command of a regiment. Later he became a cavalry general and commanded a cavalry Corps consisting of 2 Divisions of 2 brigades each. He was considered the most famous cavalry commander of the Civil War and one of the bravest. He was wounded several times and had many horses shot out from under him. After one battle, his cavalry was in charge of holding back the Union troops while the army retreated. He called a charge against the enemy but he was the only one to charge them. He had to fight his way out and he pulled one enemy soldier onto his horse as a shield but he was still shot in the back at close range---but survived. One of his most famous battle victories was the Battle of Brice's Crossroads. In this battle he attacked a force twice the size of his and completely routed them.
The commander of the Federal Army of the Cumberland at the Second battle of Murfreesboro was William S. Rosecrans. This was the second and most famous battle of Murfreesboro and was also called the Battle of Stones River. The First Battle of Murfreesboro was fought between Nathan Bedford Forrest and a Federal Cavalry force under Thomas Turpin Crittenden. It was a clear Confederate victory.

Nathan Bedford Forrest (1821-1877) was the famous Confederate cavalry officer from Tennessee who helped to start the KKK -- the Ku Klux Klan -- after the Civil War. Serving as the first 'Grand Wizard' in the shadowy organization, Forrest later saw no need to continue his affiliation with the KKK and in fact sought to put an end to its activities.
