General Joseph Hooker was in the Union Army. He reached his peak during the War in the Spring of 1863 when Lincoln appointed him to Command of the Army of the Potomac. His term of appointment was short-lived as the Union Army under his Command was routed by the Army of Northern Virginia Commanded by General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Chancellorsville. He was replaced by General George Meade.

It was the first test of the new Union General Joseph Hooker against Lee and Stonewall. Lee managed to wrong-foot Hooker by refusing to fight on the field that Hooker had chosen. This caused Hooker to lose his nerve, and he became indecisive. Stonewall then led a massive charge at off-guard Union troops who were resting easy. The battle was a brilliant Confederate victory, but Stonewall was mortally wounded in a friendly-fire incident. Neither Lee nor his army was ever the same again.
