Several countries in the British Empire have changed their names after gaining independence. For example, Ceylon became Sri Lanka in 1972, and the Gold Coast was renamed Ghana in 1957. In 1986, the British colony of Burma officially changed its name to Myanmar. Additionally, the British colony of Rhodesia is now known as Zimbabwe since 1980.
Panama is a former Spanish colony, until independence in 1821. Guyana was never a Spanish colony. Apart from the indigenous Amerindian people, it was first settled by the Dutch, and became a British colony in 1831, known as British Guiana. British Guaina became the independent country Guyana in 1966, and declared itself a republic in 1970. It is still a member of the Commonwealth of Nations (also known as the British Commonwealth).
