It reduces the overlap between two gears making for a shorter, quicker shift. This reduces clutch wear and heat. Normally line pressure will be raised slightly and you end up with a quick firm shift that is healthier for the trans.

Put on a three inch body lift by performance accesories and it has the transmission shifter bound up if you take the boot and trim piece off it will be fine but you dont want a giant hole in your floo?

ok the best way you are going to solve this problem is to install a longer transmission shifter. this is also not an expensive fix. i am surprised the extension didnt come with the lift kit, assuming a lift KIT was used and not just a put together lift

What would cause a 91 capri to have lost spring tension in the side to side motion of the shifter?

Your shifter assembly is just shot. Happens to most older ford/mercury shifters. There is a shifter rebuild kit available online...usually Ebay, that sells for about $85 that will fix it. It comes with a new link, some plastic and rubber bushings etc. and can be easily installed from under the car. Look for a shifter rebuild kit. To prevent this from hapening again DO NOT DRIVE with your hand ON THE SHIFTER! Use it only to shift!

1st 3rd 5th gear still dont work after ive already switched the transmission out and new clutch kit and it is the same problem as before i switched it out on a 1991 geo storm What is it?

Check the condition and adjustments of the shifter assembly under the console. The for-and-aft movement of the shifter handle controls the selection of 1st vs. 2nd, 3rd vs. 4th and 5th vs. Reverse. If the cable is out of adjustment or broken you can select only the "upper" or "lower" gears. Excessive component wear could cause this too. My '93 GSI lost the clip that held one cable to the transmission. I could get 1st sometimes, but mostly it would stay in 3rd. Again, check the shifter cables and the condition of things under the shifter boot.
