Knights were of the noble class so they got land and money through the king, marriage, or booty. If you weren't noble you couldn't be a knight and this started very young. The noble boys were put into training at 7-8 years old, became squires at 15, and a knight at 21. They were to give a certain number of days/months in the kings army and in training. This was part of their duty. They also served the king in other ways at court. Marriage of two wealthy families was also another way to gain land, money and power. Many knights also came back very wealthy from the crusades where they were able to gain booty. Add all of this together and they had no problems.

Well, not all knights did same, some were adventurers and were always in search of fortune, fame, wealth, or just wanderers, some prefered to serve a King or Lord so that after many years of service they could be rewarded with land or some other title.

In bad cases some were disinherited, they were sent away from home, to seek their own fortune. Joining crusades was also i'd say common, there were crusades at the east of Prussia against pagan Lithuania, in Middle East against the saracens, also in Spain against the Moorish Caliphate. Some joined military orders dedicating their life at serving the order, like the Templar order, Hopitaller,Teutonic, order of St. Lazarus...etc
