In the late 1800s, women in some parts of the west had more opportunities for independence and self-expression compared to women on the east coast. Western women often had more egalitarian relationships with men, were more involved in politics and activism, and had greater access to education and employment. In contrast, women on the east coast faced more societal restrictions and were still largely confined to traditional roles in the home and family.
