Landscape orientation is when the long edge of a piece of rectangular paper (A4 for example) is horizontal. This is the same as the display on a computer or TV.

Portrait orientation is when the long edge of a piece of rectangular paper is vertical. This is the orientation normally used in printing text.

In word processing, portrait and landscape are the way the page is viewed on the screen. If the longest side is vertical at the side, it is in the portrait format. If the longest side is horizontal at the top, it is in the landscape format.

These terms are often used for paper, when printing. "Portrait" means the paper is printed in such a way that the height is larger than the width. "Landscape" is the other way. Note that the paper is normally placed in a single position; for "landscape", the information to be printed is rotated by software.

There are two orientation modes. Landscape - is the normal 'horizontal' view for pictures (think wide-screen tv). Portrait - is a 'vertical' view (think looking outside your bedroom window).
